Adrian teleported three times in quick succession, touching a traffic cone each time. Immediately after touching the third cone, Adrian clicked a stopwatch. 0.51. Crap. He was experimenting with multiple fast teleportations in a row. The fastest time Adrian had so far achieved was 0.38 seconds. Adrian figured it would come in handy some day, so he was trying hard to shave time. After a quick adjustment of his athletic shirt, Adrian teleported over to his cooler of Gatorade. Today was a moderately cool afternoon, and no one was really willing to do anything so Adrian figured he would spend the rest of the day in the training area. With the back of his hand, Adrian wiped the sweat off of his brow. Teleporting wasn't that physically strenuous, but after a while it was tiring. The sensation of teleportation was strange, almost like having the air gently knocked out of you for a moment, then having it rush back in as the light came back. It was even stranger because it all happened in less than a tenth of a second. Adrian was sitting on the bench when he heard footsteps coming to wards him. Adrian turned his head slightly to look to wards the north entrance, wondering who it was.

Mel hated training with her powers, it hurt too much. Her whole head hurt, which made her body hurt. The instructors tried so hard to make sure she could push herself, trying to expand, but she'd close up again, freak out and run away.
That's what she was doing again.
She just left, and she headed for the gym, which was usually empty at this time of day. it was where Ed had taken her before... and planted one on her. But as she stepped into the room,m another person's thoughts clouded her mind. Something about teleportation times and who was joining him.
It wasn't Ed. But at least it was just one person.
"Hi." Mel said out loud. Most people found it strange if she talked to them in their minds.

"Hi." She said. Adrian stood and teleported over to her. He was careful not to appear right in front of her, that tended to freak people out. "H-hey." He said with a bashful smile. Her name was Melete, but she preferred Mel. "Mel." He added hastily, happy to show he knew who she was. Adrian wasn't sure if she knew him or not. Most of the pretty girls around Foxglove didn't really know Adrian well, he got too nervous when he talked to them. He didn't have any classes with Mel, since she was a Senior. Adrian wasn't sure what to do now and started worrying if she would be offended by an insignificant Junior guy having the nerve to talk to her. The nerve, that's funny., Adrian thought. Adrian didn't have "Nerve". Now that he thought about it, he was suprised he had even had the courage to talk to her in the first place. Adrian swallowed nervously, already stumbling over the words he wanted to say. The smile that had been present on his face slowly peeled away and was replaced by a grimace. She probably thinks I'm a total loser, thought Adrian.

Was she really that pretty? Did she seem hard to approach? She'd never seen herself that way at all, and here he was worried. And she was flattered that he knew her name, but she could not for the life of her remember who he was. Not yet anyway. Mel bit her lip as his thoughts rushed into her head.
"Don't worry about it. I don't think you're a loser at all. But sorry to say I don't remember you're name." Mel said with a gentle smile. Hopefully that would also tip him off as to what her powers were, just so he could try and watch his thoughts if there was anything he had to hide. People wouldn't believe the things that Melete had learned without even trying. She had a pretty good memory too. Good thing she wasn't the gossiping type or anything.
"Oh, wait... Adrian, right?" Mel asked with a hopeful look. She wasn't sure why she remembered but he was familiar.

"Don't worry about it. I don't think you're a loser at all. But sorry to say I don't remember you're name." Mel said. Adrian blushed. She was telepathic. He wasn't really sure how one would go about blocking their thoughts, but Adrian didn't have much to hide. "Oh, wait... Adrian, right?" Mel asked. "Ye-yeah." Adrian replied, his cheeks reddening slightly. With his ebony skin, this was hard, but not impossible to notice if you were perceptive. That aside, Adrian felt elated that she even knew his name. Maybe she had found it in his mind, but Adrian thought that she wouldn't need confirmation if she had found it in his own mind. Smiling, he tentatively offered his hand to her. "Nice t-to meet y-you." Adrian said. She seemed to be a kind person, the kind that didn't screw with Adrian just because of how he talked.

Did he have a stutter? At first Mel just thought he was nervous. not like it really mattered to her. He didn't think in stutters, so she'd know exactly what he meant if he ever got hard to understand verbally. But he obviously need friends and so she smiled kindly at him. "Nice to meet you too." She agreed taking his hand and shaking it.
Mel skipped toward the cones. "Practicing? I wish I had a power like that." One that did something, she just got head aches from information overloads.

Adrian smiled wider when she shook his hand. "Nice to meet you too." Mel said. By now Adrian's grin was huge. It wasn't very often that he met people as kind a Mel. Most people just wrote him off. Adrian let go of her hand as she skipped off to wards the three cones he had been practicing with. "Practicing? I wish I had a power like that." She said, seeming to Adrian almost wishfully. "Yeah, thanks!" Adrian said without a hint of stuttering in his voice. Happy that someone admired his ability, he teleported over to stand next to Mel. "It's pretty sweet sometimes." Adrian said proudly. It was rare he got to show off his abilities. Remembering his manners, Adrian asked her, "What's it like being able to read m-minds? I bet that's pretty awesome." Adrian asked with the guess on the side. Adrian thought of all the cool stuff you could do with that power.

Mel smiled. "Well, it makes movies very hard to watch because you can't read the minds of the people on screen. But I guess its okay, you can tell when people are lying to you generally. But my powers, they don't turn off, its like everyone's thoughts are a radio, closer to me the louder. But I hear everyone at once." Mel said. It only worked room by room, but that why she could never go into the auditorium. She'd hear the thoughts of everyone, plus they'd be talking... it was torture really.
"What's it like to teleport?" She asked to be fair. Plus, she was curious.

"I can see how that would be annoying..." Adrian said with a touch of sympathy. That would be terrible. He had no idea how she was able to concentrate all the time. Adrian found himself trying to make his mental voice quieter. He had no idea how Togo about it, but he figured he should try to make it easier for his new found friend Mel. "What's it like to teleport?" She asked him curiously. This was perfect. That was his favorite thing in the world to tell people about. "It's amazing. You feel the air being pulled out of you gently, then it's somewhat like swinging your head quickly t-to the side. You have a vague idea what will b-be there, but not a definite picture. It's one of the greatest sensations you can f-f-feel... I could show you, if you want." Adrian said, letting the words spill out. It was amazing how little he had stuttered throughout the small monologue. Adrian smiled as his offer hung in the air, and put out his hand for her to take. He had tried teleporting others before, always with success. It was just more strenuous on his mind and body. It was like lifting something extremely heavy, then being made to do it with something even heavier. But if Mel wanted to do it, Adrian was all for it.

"Sure." Mel said taking his hand without hesitation. Sure some kids in the school were bad kids, but not most of them, and he was far too sweet and nervous. She didn't even think twice about trusting him. Maybe that was dumb, but what else could she do? Mel had never gotten to experience what someone else's powers were first hand, she could watch their mind while they did something, see what happened, but she never did it.

"Sure." She said quickly, trust emanating from her voice. Adrian blinked, usually people were a little more fearful of teleportation. Adrian smiled though, happy someone had that kind of trust in him. She's so... nice, thought Adrian. Adrian took her hand gently. It was strange, he knew he wouldn't hurt her by teleporting but he felt compelled to be gentle because he was slightly afraid. Afriad that something bad might happen if he wasn't gentle enough. But that was ridiculous, Adrian told himself. Wondering where to teleport, he looked around the training building. He didn't want to teleport too far, but anywhere inside the building would probably be fine. There, thats perfect!, thought Adrian. Closing his eyes, he realized that he had never really concentrated on teleporting before. It just happened when he wanted it to. Adrian pictured the place in his mind, then it happened, the gentle feeling of your air being pushed out, the rush of soft light, then the new picture in front of you. Adrian opened his eyes. "How was it?" He asked Mel excitedly. They were standing on the second story, right in front of a large window. He hoped she had enjoyed it. There was no doubt that he had.

She hardly had time to think, of course, she'd seen the picture of the second story window in his head, and for a second, she couldn't breathe but in an instant she was fine. Mel realized she had squeezed her eyes shut tight and she opened them when his thoughts came back to her.
And there they were, at the window. It hardly seemed possible and Mel grinned. How cool! Really. Maybe he didn't think so, but she'd enjoyed it. It was strange, hardly felt like doing anything at all.
"You know what's weird, your mind goes completely blank when you teleport, that second where you've stopped thinking of where your going, right before you open your eyes... just nothing." Mel had never once been with another person and not heard what they thought.

Adrian could see she had enjoyed it. Who wouldn't? "You know what's weird, your mind goes completely blank when you teleport, that second where you've stopped thinking of where your going, right before you open your eyes... just nothing." Mel said. Adrian paused and thought about that. She was right, he didn't think at all before teleporting. "I think it's because I-it's harder for me to teleport when I'm thinking hard about it. It's easier not to think about it, to just do it." Adrian said, while he fidgeted with his hands, his eyes downcast. Even though Mel never made fun of him, he was still cautious of what he said. Old habits die hard. Looking up to Mel, he looked her in the eye. It was so much easier to be himself around her, she was nicer than most people, but what was cool was it wasn't pity, it was genuine kindness. Mel didn't care if he had a stutter, Mel didn't care if he was this or that. It was great to hang out with her. A thought occured to Adrian. The most he had ever teleported was a car. That had left him pretty wasted. What were the limits of his powers? Adrian filed that in the back of his mind as something to experiment with later. Adrian looked back up to Mel, wondering, what next? He hoped she could hear him.

"Don't hurt yourself, start small." She said, verbally responding to his spoken thought of moving things bigger than a car. Mel was always doing that, not remembering which was a thought and which was a spoken thought. She laughed at herself lightly and shook her head a little.
"Whatever you want." Mel said telepathically, he'd hear her in his mind, but her lips wouldn't have moved. It was very convenient when you wanted to ask something and get an answer without making a sound. As long as the other person thought their answer.
She'd slipped her hands into the back pockets of her jeans and waited for his reply.

Adrian smiled ruefully. He couldn't hide anything from Mel. She was right, he should take small steps. Still, Adrian could almost see himself teleporting people to safety, crashing planes to an airport. A hero, that was it. Adrian could almost see himself as a hero, one who saved people. Whatever you want, He heard in his head. Mel's connection worked both ways? Huh, that was different. But all the kids here were different. That was why they were here. Whatever I want? Adrian thought it over for several moments then decided. Do you want to go hang out at the mall?, he thought, well, asked. Girls liked to go shopping right? Right?, he thought, knowing Mel would hear him.
